Announcements from Lion President Glenn
April 2003
Those in attendance at the regular March 3rd meeting heard a report on a field trip to Country Meadows Nursing Center by 22 of our Junior Leos. (The Fredericktown Junior Leo Club now exists officially.) Their advisor, Karen Pritchard is doing a great job. It was also revealed that Mandy Baldwin will advise the Peace Poster Contest again next year for students ages 11, 12, and 13.
Lion Janice took the challenge of writing another
verse to the new Fredericktown Lions Club song.
(Making it a perfect Lions Club song.) She admits
having had some assistance from daughter and
granddaughter. She read her lyrics and we plan to
sing the complete song at a meeting in the near
future. (I'm not telling exactly when because we are having enough trouble getting Lions to attend meetings. Ha!) A report on the progress of the nominating
committee was presented by Lion Janice.
Program Chairman, Dan Humphrey, introduced the main speaker for the evening. Steve Hoyt has been with the Pilot Dogs Program for 13 years. Alvin, the Black Lab who accompanied Steve stole the show when he proved he could lead one of our most obtuse Lions, Morris James, through an obstacle course. Mr. Hoyt enlightened us concerning many aspects of the Columbus organization. At the end of the presentation, VP Ken Kemp presented Steve with a Lions Club check for $500 to be used toward a building addition to improve their facility. Our Club's donation will be acknowledged by having our name on a wall plaque displayed in the new facility. An open invitation to visit the Pilot Dog complex was extended to all.
The Fredericktown Lions enjoyed learning about one
of only two musical instruments created in our country
at the regular March 17th meeting. Lion Dan Humphrey
recruited Dr. John Hollingsworth who, along with his
wife, Brenda, presented a very interesting and entertaining program concerning the Dulcimer. (The
other American instrument is the five-string banjo.)
We learned some things about the custom construction
of the instrument and enjoyed listening to the quaint
sounds of several Hollingsworth-made Dulcimers in a
medley of familiar tunes.
Lions Janice and Pat reported on some of their
experiences at the District 13-K Convention. Our club
was the recipient of many achievement awards for the
year. Congratulations and kudos to the Fredericktown
Lions Club members!!! Janice and Pat spent the entire
weekend in Zanesville and were not arrested once.
Hard to believe.
IPP Janice Harris, chairperson of the nominating
committee, reported a full slate of office candidates
for next year. The election will be held at a regular
meeting in April.

April 7 - The topic will be geriatric counseling.
Speaker to be a surprise.
April 21 - A presentation concerning the Camp
Echoing Hills organization.

Attending were: Bill More, Janice Harris, Ed Erick,
Joyce Kemp, Bea Burton, and Ken Kemp. The meeting was chaired by President Glenn Myers.
1) A sincere and appreciative thank you letter from
the President of the Fredericktown Historical Society
was read by President Myers.
2) Lion Janice reported that raffle tickets are ready
to be distributed. The date for the drawing was set
for our regular Park meeting, July 14th.
3) The board approved expenditures for two pairs of
glasses for students identified by school authorities
as needing assistance.
4) A possible concession project at the July 112th
Auto Show was discussed. The issue was tabled pending
more detailed information.

(Fredericktown Lionism Goes Downtown)
The spark of an idea came to me recently while I was on heavy pain medication for back and sciatic terror. It may seem more like a forest fire than a spark to some of you. Even if that be the case, please keep in mind that there are many long range benefits from forest fires. Here it is.
First, our club would rent space in one of the vacant buildings on Main Street, Fredericktown. Then a large purple and gold sign goes up. Okay, maybe we could trim the sign in red? Hey, something is happening downtown. Lion?s visibility!!! We could use the building for our meetings and special projects. (For fund raising and for community service) We could sell Amish pies and donated English pies. We could make and sell donuts. We could have an office open for a couple of hours daily making the Lions Club visible and available for service to our community. People would come!! A living nucleus would be born on Main Street.
After a while, we would buy the building, develop upper levels and/or unused spaces into attractive downtown Lions Residential Flats for rent. The rent income would be used for a down payment on another vacant Main Street building. More Lions flat rentals could be prepared for people who would like living in the quaint environment of Lions Main Street. Well, look at that!! There are people in downtown Fredericktown. It is alive and exciting.
Local investors would become interested and they would develop more downtown residential flats in other vacant buildings attracting even more people. All these people would begin to demand services. Small businesses would move in and fill the rest of the spaces. (People attract businesses and businesses attract people!) The new commercial establishments would get even more traffic from the railroad, I mean the new Owl Creek Bike/Hike Trail. Does this sound like downtown revitalization, or what?
Well, the medication must be wearing off because this is beginning to remind me of Main Street in a wonderful, friendly, busy, little village I knew sixty years ago. That village was called FREDERICKTOWN!! Isn't it something what a little spark of Lionism could do???
